Ms. Mattrey, the team’s attorney advisor, helped the team demonstrate
their legal knowledge in a hypothetical civil hit and run case against
forty local schools at the Erie County Tournament. The entire Clarence
team, Ms. Mattrey and Mr. DiNicolantonio were honored at the Erie
County Bar Association’s Law Day Luncheon on April 30th and
advanced to the regional competition in Rochester, NY on May 10th.
Competing against six other Western New York County teams, Clarence
was able to secure their spot in the state finals.
The Erie County and Western New York Mock Trial Tournament are
education programs for public and private high schools in the region.
The program is sponsored in conjunction with the New York State Bar
Association’s Law, Youth and Citizenship Committee – the organization
that develops the case, either criminal or civil, which is used as the
statewide model. The program provides a forum for students to learn
about the law, legal system and court procedures as well as improve on
their basic skills such as listening, reasoning and ability to think
on their feet. Throughout the tournament, teams argue the prosecution
and defense and team members act as attorneys and witnesses. The
program receives strong support from lawyers and judges who volunteer
and participate as mock trial judges and attorney advisors each year.
Clarence High School
offers an exciting variety of courses and activities to help prepare
students for post secondary education and/or future careers. The
instructional program is designed to encourage students to achieve at
the highest level possible, with emphasis on Regents, Honor, and
Advanced Placement courses. Over 50 percent of the students
participate in interscholastic sports. There are over 30
extracurricular offerings that provide ample opportunities for
students to explore and develop social, vocational, and cultural
interest.
